Never underestimate the importance of researching the employer before the interview. To successfully compete for a position, you need to impress upon the interviewer that you are familiar with the employer and that, for reasons you will emphasize during the interview, you are an excellent match for the job.
Remember, also, that your evaluation of the employer is as important as its evaluation of you. Does what you learn about the employer interest you? Will the employer's areas of focus help you reach your personal and professional goals? Has the employer been in business long enough to allow evaluation of its stability? Does the type of work being offered seem congruent with your personality?
Several valuable avenues of research include:
- Reviewing an employer's website either on our Company Links page or on our eRecruiting system
- Reviewing Co-op Work Reports in our Office
- Reviewing employer literature in the Career Services Library
- Searching for employer web sites on the Internet
- Consulting the New York Times Index, Business Periodicals Index, and College Placement Annual at the Georgia Tech Library
- Asking employers to send you annual reports and literature
- Asking your advisor for names of other students working for the employer and talking with these individuals
- Getting the advice of your advisor and the counselors in Career Services
- Talking with family and friends who may be familiar with the employer
